Blogging Task 2

On the Religion, Belief and Faith identities UAL Website

I watch this video below

A brief history of religion in art – TED-Ed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfITRYcnP84

A video that talks about the history of religion in art. On how art was the only portrayal

of religious beliefs. It is a fantasizing subject to look at. Religion is and was a huge influence in art, Performances, Films, buildings.

For the performance students would be a research resources looking at religious influence in performances what they mean to them. How could they use it to support their work? With religious acts you must make sure it portrays in its proper manner or there be a lot upset people. Bit like the film The Passion of The Christ by Mel Gibson did to the Christen faith. Even if the film was what I would say a close story of what would have happen back in them times.

3 headings from the ‘Religion in Britain: Challenges for Higher Education.’ Stimulus paper (Modood & Calhoun, 2015)

Multiculturalism

I think People need to make more of an effort to come to terms with Multiculturalism there are many people in the world all with different views, backgrounds and faiths. We are still human so way can’t just treat people as that remove the labels as it doesn’t bother me what you are will treat you as a person. This is very optimistic for most people as they grow up with views that have passed down from generation to generation. Also, people fear things they don’t know that’s what happened with the Islamist community just because a few people from that religion formed a terrorist network. Now people fear that religion. This has happened throughout history. This could be changed and think Multiculturalism can be the way forward in the world.

Changes in religious demography

As the country becomes more and more diverse these numbers will keep changing. Young people of today are proud of their heritage and where they have come from in the Pakistani and Bangladeshi, Indians and African Asians Religion is a big factor in the family past down from family member to family member. This gives them their identities in this modern world where a social status is needed. Also, the Christian faith was forced on you back when I was a child in schools. We had the morning pray and the grace at lunchtime. This don’t happen anymore in school well non religions schools anyway.

Minority identities

I Agree with the comments made in this chapter that minority religions are id by their religious beliefs if these things weren’t needed how would those religions be different than any other religion these identities set them apart from the others. There with always be people that don’t follow all the identities rules this doesn’t mean that they are not religions.

This person is spot on about this. Identities are very important for the religious faiths gives them their status in the wider committee feel like ive covered the same views in the other parts of the task.

Netflix Show ” Keep Sweet Pray & Obey

This docuseries examines the rise of warren jeffs in the Fundamentalist church of jesus christ of latter-day saints and his shocking criminal case https://www.netflix.com/browse?jbv=81292539

If you have not seen it then i would recommend this show. i found it shocking that people still believe and follow this religion and follow the ways of this church. it is sickening and twisted that them poor people was born into this commutity and that one person can hold that much power over familes and call it an act of god.

  • It was good to read your thoughts on these resources Luke.

I wondered what this might mean for your teaching practice and context as a performance technician? How does faith shape your interactions with students, is it something that often comes up in their work?

One thing that has come up for me recently is how I might be more conscious of certain religious practices, such as fasting during Ramadan, and how this might impact on my students in the classroom. I’m assuming this would be an even greater consideration for your work as performance is likely to be more physically demanding?

There’s some good information and resources on Canvas aroung this, including: https://canvas.arts.ac.uk/documents/sppreview/1a72af2c-8ef9-42d5-9688-1fb56e3c1c5f

The religious observance and festivals calendar is helpful too: https://canvas.arts.ac.uk/sites/explore/SitePage/45803/religious-observance-and-festivals-calendar

    • Thanks Fenalla, As a Performance technician my teaching Practice is more skills based learning. Faith and cutlure dose come up often with students. not long ago a stundent did a film about the conflict in jerusalem and how media coverage about it. also have student do performances on there background tradition i.e. Indian dance, Traditional Chinese Performances, there was one situation where a director of a play wanted the cast to wear head scarves. this we felt would cause offence to the people of that religion as non of the cast was of that faith so the university put a stop of that. in terms of religious practices ive not come across any students that has had a problem performing because of there faith. but this is definitely something to consider when working with the stundents.

  • Thank you for your thoughts Luke. I agree that we need to embrace multiculturalism in order to learn to be aware of one another, exchange values and learn to respect them. You’ve mentioned islamphobia and how these stereotypes and misrepresentation and the usage of religion has allowed hatred and division between humans. This made me think about how the media has a false narrative on depicting and enforcing certain race or religion group as terrorist/ criminal, while white terrorists/ criminals are are often humanised in the media. This also reminded me of the hate crime – https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/feb/02/finsbury-park-attack-darren-osborne-jailed .

I recently watched the documentary that you have mentioned in here and I agree with you – how religion, God, was used as an excuse to inflict pain, loss, fear, continue misogyny, etc.
